On a Sunday morning, December 2010, I woke up feeling down. I picked up a magazine and read an article by Joanne Blum called, “Gratitude: A Matter of Perspective” and it was all about focusing on the positive. Here is a quote: “The key to successful prayer, the key to a sense of well-being and satisfaction, the key to bringing something new and positive into our lives, comes down to this simple directive–turn away from the problem and put your focus on the good.” I shrugged, turned on my computer, and started to check my email. I glanced at my “priority list” and didn’t feel like reading any emails there, so I scrolled down to the “everything else” section. I clicked on an emagazine (Evolution Ezine) and saw a link to a video with Juan Mann giving out free hugs. It was the first time I had ever seen or heard about “free hugs.”
One week later, I was out in one of the busiest places in Tokyo giving free “Christmas hugs.” I took to hugging pretty well being the youngest of 12 with 8 older sisters and 3 older brothers. Anyway, several free hug events later (including two videos for the tsunami victims in Japan, and later, “Free Hugs for World Peace”), I’m now organizing “Free Hugs for World Peace II.”
Focusing on the positive can change your life. It can send you in a direction where you find yourself engaged in activities that consume you–the kind of activies that make you lose track of time. These are the types of things that you know you are somehow destined to do because, with a little focused effort, things fall into place like magic. That’s the way I feel about my free hug events. Combining “free hugs” with the goal of world peace, gave me a purpose that felt greater than my own life goals as an educator and writer. World peace? Is it possible? Well, not without a vision. Not without a small ripple of peace that just keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger. Thank you Joanne Blum and Science of Mind that initially tipped me toward the positive that Sunday morning. Thank you Cyndi of Evolution Ezine. Thank you Juan Mann for starting the FREE HUGS campaign, and thank you Carol for starting Positive Focus and Global Free Hugs.
I was delighted to take part in Positive Focus’s Global Free Hugs event in May of this year, and I am also excited to be a guest writer on this website to let everyone know about 1 True Spirit’s Free Hugs for World Peace event that will take place on September 21–International Day of Peace.
Let’s all focus on the positive and strive for peace.
Hugs to all,
