As a mother, there are never enough hours in the day to get everything done. Days are unpredictable and full of change in sleep routines, food preferences and kids’ attitudes. We all strive to take care of ourselves, but we’re at the end of our priority lists.
This past week, I had an “aha” moment. Instead of endless “to do” lists that I never complete, I started a “done list”. When I do something that merits a pat on the back, I write it down. It could be doing 5 loads of laundry or making healthy meals for my family even when I don’t feel like cooking. It could be getting a workout in, even if it’s 20 minutes long. Last week, I wrote “Hanging the shade back up in Micha’s room, while she slept and not waking her”. I also wrote “Taking care of Luca by getting up at 5am every morning and sometimes in the middle of the night because of his teething”.
The beauty of the “done list” is that allows me to recognize and give myself credit for what I’m doing. With “to do” lists, I focus on the tasks left undone. I feel bad that a week has gone and I haven’t accomplished all I set out to do. This flips my actions into a positive one. I get to write things as I do them and then have a page full to reread on Sunday. Seeing my “done list” is satisfying and encouraging.
I think all parents should keep a “done list” and take pride in everything you write down. I haven’t even thought of “giving all my time and attention to my children to raise them to be caring, loving and healthy” until right now and that’s one of the most important things a person can do in life!! Parenting demands selflessness. It’s a total 180 from pre-child(ren) life, where we are often selfish–able to do what we want, whenever we want to. We do so much as parents and it’s good to reflect on all we do. It’s also great for the parent who stays home because there are things we do that our partners don’t see. We can and should validate ourselves for everything seen and unseen.
Take 10 minutes and make yourself a pretty “done list” paper. I made the one above and am going to make photocopies so I can keep this up. It feels good and we all deserve to do things that make us feel good.
Cheers to you and ALL you are DOING!!
Hugs, 😉 Angela
