The Kindness of Strangers – Day 14

The Power of Cookies
Thank you to a Stranger #14
While many of the days in December are full of activity at the restaurant, there are a few quieter days along the way and today was one of those. About halfway through the afternoon a lady who I recognized by face but didn’t know by name walked through the front door carrying a holiday gift tin.
She walked right up to me and said, “I hope your diet allows for you to eat some cookies. You are always so nice to me and to everybody for that matter so when I was baking yesterday I made you some of my old fashioned oatmeal cookies. They are the ones from the recipe that used to be on the Quaker oats tin back in the 50s and 60s but you can’t find the recipe anymore. My mom used to make them too I hope you’ll enjoy”
I thanked her and told her that I would have one right after my lunch in an hour or so. See I don’t even like oatmeal cookies, but I figured if there was a good one on the planet it would be these ones. The box smelled divinely of three things; fresh oats, butter and vanilla.
So after lunch I made a cup of expresso and ate the most delicious oatmeal cookie I’ve ever tasted. I think the reason it was so tasty was because they were baked with love, they came with a great story and they were an act of thoughtfulness that said so much more than a simple compliment might say.
So thank you to the lady who baked me oatmeal cookies. You kindness made a quiet December Monday oh so special!
I wanted to write my whole life. By age 45 it had amounted to nothing more than a storage locker of half full journals and a lot of unfulfilled dreams. Then Paris in the fall of 2011 happened. It was the catalyst I needed to consistently blog. At first I had a hard time hitting the publish button, but now two blog sites and over 300 posts later I’m hitting my stride. I’m also a budding speech writer. I’ve recently been heavily involved in the Chicago Storytelling scene and have also won the Chicago Toastmasters Area 66 International Speech Contest.
