The Kindness of Strangers – Day 9
by Jim Herbert
Love knows no obstacles that it can not rise above
Thank you to s stranger #9
Monday night I found myself walking on Michigan Avenue during the post-work rush hour. Michigan Avenue is always a scene, but even more so in December. The mix of local workers, shoppers, out of town tourists and homeless people looking for help are just a few of the souls who fill the streets. It can be beautiful and overwhelming all at the same time.
I saw many of the typical scenes in the people I passed on the streets. I saw people Face timing in their phones as they walked. I saw people dashing into traffic to cross the street even when they didn’t have the right of way. I heard cars honking angrily at other cars that didn’t move fast enough. Then as I crossed Superior as I walked south on Michigan Avenue I saw this:
I saw a man and a woman in wheelchairs rolling side by side at a casual pace and they were holding hands. I’ve seen countless wheelchairs on the streets of Chicago in my 25 years but I’ve never seen two people in wheelchairs holding hands. I made eye contact with the gentleman and smiled. He smiled back. Then I just stood there and watched them roll south. The scene defined such a simple beauty of all that is right in this world.
So thank you to the couple in the wheelchairs on Michigan avenue who reminded me that even in the hustle and bustle of the December rush hour, there is time to slow down, to love, to help each other and to touch our fellow humans in any way possible.
I’ve been wanting to write my whole life. By age 45 it had amounted to nothing more than a storage locker of half full journals and a lot of unfulfilled dreams. Then Paris in the fall of 2011 happened. It was the catalyst I needed to consistently blog. At first I had a hard time hitting the publish button, but now two blog sites and over 300 posts later I’m hitting my stride. I’m also a budding speech writer. I’ve recently been heavily involved in the Chicago Storytelling scene and have also won the Chicago Toastmasters Area 66 International Speech Contest. Website: http://www.emergingintojoy.com.
