Today is my 34th birthday. Since becoming a mother, I have a new respect for what a BIRTH day actually means. For the first 31 years of my life, I knew it simply as the day I was born. I never thought about labor possibly starting days before. I’d also never known the anticipation that parents feel as their child’s estimated birth date nears. There’s a lot of emotion and excitement before an actual BIRTH day materializes, before the MIRACLE of a new life begins…
I have always loved birthdays. Our family made them very special. The birthday kid got to choose all the meals and activities for the day. After dinner, my godparents (like second grandparents) always played a slideshow they’d made. My godfather would take pictures of me throughout the year. Then my godparents would sync the pictures up to the lyrics of “I am a Promise”. The slideshow would reflect our growth in the year, and also our interests and accomplishments. I always felt happy and proud seeing the pictures. The time and effort put into making the slideshow always made you feel loved and special. The song lyrics also boosted you up: “You are a promise, you are a possibility, you are a promise, with a capital P. You are a great big bundle of potentiality!”
We all need to remember that. No matter our age, we are possibilities and big bundles of potentiality. We are unique. There is NO OTHER BEING on this Earth like us. That makes us special. We downplay our specialness but we shouldn’t; it allows us to offer the world something no one else can. We each have a light that is capable of shining bright and touching all those we meet. We doubt our lights, or cover them up sometimes, but we shouldn’t…we should wake up each day and decide to shine, shine, shine.
Every day is someone’s BIRTH day. Let’s pause and think about what that means. Every day someone special is being celebrated. That thought fills me with happiness.
It allows me to feel more connected to those around me. It also fills me with love because life is not to be taken for granted…each life matters and makes a difference in our world!
I hope you have a GREAT birthday, whenever your special day is. Shine bright this week and realize the gift you are to the world.
